In detail
The 9800X3D is Zen 5 with second-generation 3D V-Cache: the cache die sits beneath the compute die rather than on top of it, so heat escapes more readily than on the previous generation, and the multiplier is unlocked.
In games the cache is what decides the result. 96 MB of L3 holds an engine's working set outright, and frame pacing flattens exactly where an ordinary processor stalls on memory: large open maps, simulators, strategy titles moving thousands of units. In rendering and compilation eight cores look modest next to 12- and 16-core parts, and that is an honest trade: this chip is tuned for latency, not throughput.
Fits socket AM5 with a B650, B850 or X870 board. No cooler is included, and that is not the manufacturer economising: at 120 W TDP it needs a serious air or liquid cooler or it will pull its clocks back.
